Master of Arts in Communication Studies, Texas State University

Why did you decide to pursue a career in higher education?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a career in higher education was working as an undergrad on campus. I was a math tutor at SLAC, a grader in the Math Department, and a T.A. in the Psychology Department. Through these jobs, I was able to see how helping students in the university environment appealed to me. I knew, at that point, that my career would be assisting students in any capacity in higher ed. I’m very fortunate that my job is at my alma mater and feel I’m making a difference on a daily basis.

What is your favorite part of working for Texas State University?
My favorite part of working for Texas State is the environment. Beyond the beautiful campus, my work environment is supportive and the best place to achieve my professional goals. My coworkers are very caring and genuine. The students I advise are amazing and share their experiences and aspirations. Together, these individuals make my days brighter and make me feel that I made the right choice choosing TXST to advance my career.

What “words of wisdom” would you like to share with students?
Enjoy the journey. This is your education. Take advantage of the resources at TXST, your freedom, and the lessons you will learn. Remember why you are here and always do your best. Even though you will have ups and downs, you can always “begin again”. Finally, try to include study abroad in your journey. I did not take advantage of this opportunity as an undergrad and I wish I had.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I am a thrill seeker. Rollercoasters, free falls, whitewater rafting, reverse bungees, and ziplines complete my life!
