About Us

The African American Studies (AAS) Minor at Texas State University began in August 2019, with Dr. Dwonna Naomi Goldstone as the first director. Housed under the Center for Diversity and Gender Studies (CDGS), the AAS Minor is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the Black experience in the United States and throughout the African diaspora.

The goal is to fulfill the mission that Dr. Carter G. Woodson started in 1915 when he created the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASALH)—to know the accomplishments of Black Americans and to honor Black history and heritage.

Sankofa Bird Logo

The Sankofa bird reminds us that we must move forward as we remember the past.  From the Akan people of Ghana, West Africa—“go back and fetch it”; we must look back to the past so that we may understand how we became what we are and move forward to a better future.  We must go back and claim our past so that we can move forward.
