What is a Salon?

In seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France, a salon was “a fashionable assemblage of notables (such as literary figures, artists, or statesmen)." Salons were organized and hosted in private homes, usually by prominent women. Individuals who attended often discussed literature or shared their views and opinions on topics from science to politics.

The College of Liberal Arts Salon Series was founded to foster meaningful discussions about the humanities. The Series provides facilitated conversations in an intimate setting with our Liberal Arts faculty that aim to showcase their research and explain its impact on the world around us. We invite students, alumni and friends of The College to meet and engage with our faculty in an effort to explore a variety of topics and to promote thoughtful dialogue.
